Paul Esch is proud to compete in this year’s Capital Cup on behalf of Cristo Rey High School Sacramento. Paul believes every talented student deserves the chance to reach their full potential, regardless of financial circumstance, and that’s exactly what Cristo Rey Sacramento delivers. The school pairs a rigorous Catholic, college preparatory education with a one-of-a-kind Corporate Work Study Program: beginning as freshmen, students spend five days each month working in local businesses and nonprofit organizations, gaining real professional experience while helping fund their own education. By graduation, each student has logged more than 1,200 hours of meaningful work experience and built relationships with mentors across the Sacramento region.
The results speak for themselves. The Class of 2026’s 65 graduates earned 415 acceptances to more than 100 four-year colleges and universities, with 41 percent admitted to a University of California campus and others heading to schools like Santa Clara University, UCLA, Seattle University, and Loyola University Chicago. More than 80 corporations, businesses, and nonprofit partners make this life-changing model possible.
By playing in the Capital Cup, Paul is joining a field of local leaders competing not just for a trophy, but for the causes they care about most. Modeled after the Ryder Cup, the tournament pits two teams against each other in a three-day competition, with proceeds benefiting each golfer’s chosen charity. The winning team’s charities split a $100,000 prize fund, and the event has raised more than $18 million for Sacramento-region nonprofits since it began.

Cristo Rey High School Sacramento transforms lives by providing a Catholic, College preparatory education and professional work experience to high school students with very limited financial resources.
At Cristo Rey, students work 5 days each month in local businesses to help offset the cost of their education. They know that education and a college degree will open opportunities. Through the Work Study Program model, students are helping themselves, demonstrating their commitment and changing the trajectory of their lives.
The educational opportunities Cristo Rey provides for low-income youth is unparalleled in the Greater Sacramento region. Educating and partnering with these motivated students who work diligently academically and in the work place, Cristo Rey is helping these well deserving students succeed.
Currently over 95 corporations, businesses and non-profit organizations sponsor Cristo Rey students. With this model, students are able to offset approximately 60% of the cost of their education, and upon graduation, they will have more than 1,200 hours of real work experience.
Of the 2024 graduating seniors, 100% have been accepted to at least one college or university, with over 50% accepted into a UC school. The class of 60 graduating seniors were extended 267 college acceptances.
